Learning English Through Movies Based On "Using Movies in EFL Classrooms: A Study Conducted at the English Language Institute (ELI), King Abdul-Aziz University" A Research Study By Raniah Hassen Kabooha

Hi everyone! Welcome to my first daily post of 2019! Hope you all had a great holiday and are ready to jump into the year with new projects and new ideas. I know it's been almost 2 months after the new year, but I still want to catch you cheerfully like we used to do it before starting new things for a good thing.

Starting this new year with an exciting new semester has brought me into another level of life. All the joy and stressed experience that I got from the previous semester has expected me that this semester will be going to be full of new adventures and new great experiences. Thus far, I've been doing a lot of thinking about what this year will be like for me and I've also been reflecting on the things that I did last year.

With a new semester quickly approaching, without any hesitations to say that there will be a lot of stuff I will face during this period, some assignments will be coming over and hit myself day to day .

And the today's post is coming due to an assignment which I got from my Academic Reading class. This post will set a reflection of an International Journal, a research study which related to English education that have big implications and a big role for developing English learning process.

The title of the journal is:

Using Movies in EFL Classrooms: A Study Conducted at the English
Language Institute (ELI), King Abdul-Aziz University

For some of you who might be wondering why did I choose this title, that's all because it's related to the movie. Everything goes to the movie and English is sounded amazing for me, it grabbed me so much attention. It's not other than because I am a huge fan of movie, especially Hollywood movies. Movies do not only give me so much joy and entertainments, but it also give me to get to improve my English as I'm very interested in it. I usually get to do it and learn by it for elevating my skills and it's been happening since I was in junior high school where I got the crush on this international language at once until I realized how much it could improve both my speaking and listening skill.
I'm not going to say that movie is the most important thing in the world 😃, because as I know the most important things in the world are family, friendship and else . But I'm very suggesting to everyone if you're tired of going to library or reading a book, but you want to be able to learn English, there's nothing better than learning English through movie. That's the most fun way to learn.

This Journal was compiled by Raniah Hassen Kabooha ( rkabouha@kau.edu.sa ) from King Abdul Aziz University, it is a study conducted at the English Language Intitute (ELI), King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia. English Language Teaching; Vol. 9, No. 3; 2016. ISSN 1916-4742 E-ISSN 1916-4750. This journal has received in January 3, 2016 and accepted in February 18, 2016. It published by Canadian Center of Science and Education ( www.ccsenet.org ).
This journal aims to examine Saudi Arabian English as a foreign language (EFL) learners as well as teacher towards the integration of English movie in their classes as a tool to develop students' language skills. She examined fifty female intermediate level English students studying English in their Preparatory Year Program (PYP) in the English Language Institute (ELI) at King Abdul-Aziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, participated in the study.
For those of you who don't know what Preparatory Year program is, PYP or Preparatory Year Program is a program designed to prepare students for their first year of higher education which consists of two semesters and two levels. This program aims for preparing students who are going to take a college or study to the university and for the people who are going to get a job which necessarily to be able to speak English. This program is generally set in some countries especially in Saudi Arabia, but I haven't heard about this program preparing for student here in Indonesia.

In this research, Raniah provided the questionnaires for gaining some samples, they were administered to the students to investigate their perceptions toward the using of English movies in their classes to develop their language skill. The researcher also conducted the interviews with both students and teacher to explore their perception towards the use of the movies in their class. In addition, teachers were required to write reflective journals to notes about the use movies in their classes. The findings of the study indicate that both students as well as teachers had positive things and improvement towards the use of movies in their classes to improve students’ language skills.

Here I set and explain you its introduction:

Trying and learning of a second or foreign language to be mastered is totally one of the most challenging undertakings a person may experience in his or her lifetime. In the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a country known as  the birthplace of Islam, most students have studied English as a foreign language for at least six years before they enter university. (as we know in Indonesia the student have been studied it for at least 8 years, or even more). Nevertheless, most of them are incompetent in their ability to use that language. The reasons for this case are varied and very much complex. One justification for this problem is because there's too much attention has been devoted to insensitive reading-analysis of words, sentences and grammar (Al-Akloby, 2001). Many Saudi EFL teachers only focus on grammar decoding and skill drilling.
Recently, many language instructors and scholars have been interested in investigating the effectiveness of a variety of strategies and methods that can be used in EFL classes to facilitate the learners from language skills and the teaching and the learning process. A number of studies have found that movies can become in important part and role of the curriculum due to their significant effect on the development of the basic language skills such as reading, listening, speaking, and writing
The findings of several studies which have been conducted to insvetigate the impact of using movies in EFL classroom indicate their powerful role in the teaching and learning process. According to Seferoğlu (2008), films provide authentic language input and a stimulating framework for classroom discussions. They also provide a realistic view of the language and culture providing insights into the reality of life of native English speakers. Studies have also reported some advantages to the integration of movies into foreign language classes. For instance, movies can capture the students’ attention towards the target language:

- Increase the students’ motivation to learn the language
- Supply good material to teach conversations and
- Improve the students’ awareness of the target language culture

Moreover, the integration of movies in the EFL/ESL classes can also improve the students’ academic writing skills. Khan (2015) believes that the “visuality” of movies can facilitate comprehension and understanding for the language learners in an ideal visual context, which makes it an effective language-teaching tool. She further argues that movies offer a variety of methods and resources for teaching the target language, helping students to improve their listening and communicative skills.
Although, research has indicated the impact of movies on the development of overall literacy skills, very few works examined the perceptions of EFL teachers and students towards the integration of movies in their classrooms as a tool to improve students’ language skills. It should also be noted that there are no studies conducted in the cultural context of Saudi Arabia.

And that's all the Introduction of this research study, all we can learn about it provisionally is that the integration of movies in the EFL/ESL classrooms provides that movies are greatly effective in the language classroom for a number of ends. It has been shown that movies can be exploited in the English classroom to enhance students’ critical thinking skills, their recognition of pragmatic usage and fluency, and to improve comprehension-based learning. Then, for other explanation fully of this research, such as the Literature Review, Methodology, Results and Discussion will be posted later.

But, for some of you who might be curious and want to read this research fully, I will provide the link here to the detailed and full journal as she was made.
