Why Are A Lot Of Vietnamese People Named Nguyen ?

And today post, I'm going to give you something that really interesting to be discussed. Just promise me.

What a lot of questions, right ? :D.  But however, no matter how much the questions are, and no matter how much you try to answer. I'm sure, the thing that comes to your mind when you hear something about Vietnam is about its people's name. yesss for sure, its all about SO MANY NGUYENS there.

As we know, in Vietnam there are so many people named Nguyen. Nguyen is the most popular name in Vietnam, you can find it everytime and everywhere when you're talking something about this country.

Based on the list of the Vietnam football team players of the 2018 Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang event above, there are so many Vietnam Football players who has 'Nguyen' in their name. As you can see there are Nguyen Van Hoang, Nguyen Cong Phurong, Nguyen Van Quyet, Nguyen Quang Hai, and Nguyen Anh Durc . Five players of 20 Vietnam football team squad in 2018 Asian Games has Nguyen on their name, weather at the first name or the last name. And perhaps, there are so many other 'Nguyen' in Vietnam football players who didn't participate into that tournament. Which I cannot mention all of them, because those too many, for sure.

And here's I got another picture for you.

As you can see that all of the girls on the picture have 'Nguyen' on their last name. Like Alexandra, Angela, Angelica etc. No matter what their first name are, the last name that they have is always 'Nguyen'

And it proves that 'Nguyen' is the most popular name not only for football players but also for all of the entire Vientamese people, plus, there's no gender limitation for that. Both men and women can having that kind of name . So how much common that name is !

What Is the Origin of Nguyen ?

"Nguyen" comes from Chinese world, "Ruan". Ruan means "a string instrument that is plucked"

In Vietnam, the people who named 'Nguyen' is connected to the royal dynasties. The history said that during the Tran Dynasty, there are many member of the Ly family of the prior dynasty changed their name to Nguyen in order to avoid the persecution.

After they be freed from the persecution, then the Nguyen family took the royal dynasties as early as the 16 century. And they would be rule as the last dynasties. Until finally, the Nguyen Dynasties became the lasted dynasties from 1802 until 1945, when Emperor Bao Dai abdicated.

Until there are a lot of Vietnamese people named Nguyen day by day. Many Vietnamese believe that a person who named Nguyen would have a very strong heart and has a lot of kindness.

And by some estimates, approximately 40 percent of Vietnamese people have the surname Nguyen. What an impressive number ! It's bigger than Turkey has hakan and emre, Iceland has son at the last name, and Indonesia with Muhammad and Ahmad name.

Also, Nguyen is the seventh most  most common family name in Australia. the 54th most popular in France, and the 57th most popular surname in America.

How Is 'Nguyen' Pronounced?

For native English speakers, pronouncing the name nguyen can be a challenge. Since, it's such a popular name, though, learn how to say it as best as you can. The most common mistake is to pronounce the "y".

The best way to explain the pronunciation of 'Nguyen' is : ngwin. say it fast and don't emphasize the letter "ng".  That's what it is.
